The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for a Full-Time, Boiler Plant Operator (WG-5402-10) to work at the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) in the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), 88th Air Base Wing (88 ABW), 88th Civil Engineer Group (88 CEG), 88th Civil Engineer Squadron (88 CES), Infrastructure Systems Branch, Heating Plant Section (88 CES/CEOID), Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

Qualifications/Requirements:

In this position the primarily purpose is to perform limited to moderately complex duties and tasks in the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers and boiler auxiliary equipment and to perform preventive maintenance on them. Also, this position is to assist higher grade personnel or within limits, independently performs the tasks above. Starts, operates, adjusts and maintains manual or automatic controlled boilers and auxiliary equipment in a steam or high temperature water boiler plant that requires continuous attention. Performs various operational repairs, seasonal and preventive maintenance on boilers, heat exchangers and associated auxiliary equipment. Operates, repairs and performs regular checks of industrial water treatment equipment installed to provide suitable quality water for boiler operation. Uses and maintains tools and equipment. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • Employee will be required to work overtime and call back emergency work.

  • Employee will support mobility or logistics readiness center operations in an exercise or contingency situation.

  • Employee will support all special events type work.

  • Irregular shift work may be required and may be required to perform snow and grounds maintenance augmentee duties.

  • Incumbent assigned to this position is subject to recall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

  • This position is designated as base essential.

  • May be required to be a certified Smoke Reader.

  • Thorough knowledge of the structure and operating characteristics of boilers and associated auxiliary equipment and thorough knowledge of the chemical and physical characteristics of fuels and principles of combustion, steam generation and heat transfer.

  • Thorough knowledge of technical practices in order to perform various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, auxiliary and pollution control equipment.

  • Thorough of knowledge of fuel handling and distribution equipment and systems, fuel firing mechanisms, feedwater treatment systems, emission control equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of the relationship between fuel quality and efficient combustion characteristics.

  • Thorough knowledge of water tending, analysis and basic chemical treatments and a general understanding of the individual and combined effects of chemical additives.

  • Thorough of equipment such as single or multiple fuel power boilers, fueled by gas and low sulfur oil and other equipment in a steam or high temperature hot water boiler plant.

  • Thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
